Zhiguli State Nature Reserve was organized in October 1966 on the site of a pre-existing Middle Volga (1927-1935), and Zhiguli (1959-1960) reserves.
In 1977 Zhiguli Reserve was named Professor Ivan Sprygina, organizer of the first protected area in the Lada and the first head of Middle Volga reserve.
In the reserve there are three orographic region Samara Luka - This Zhiguli mountains, plateaus, and the Samara Bend Volga floodplain and islands.
Lada. The reserve includes a central array of Zhiguli, bounded on the west Morkvashinskoy, and from the east - Shiryaevo valleys. Within the reserve ridge is cut by two valleys: Bakhilova clearing and prayer service ravine. The northern slopes descend steeply to the Lada and Volga uscheleobraznyh separated by a large number of " ravines " or " gullies " on individual spurs. End spurs crowned rocky outcrops - rocks, " cones " or " Sheehan " (Quotation marks are given in local terms). The most noteworthy - Strelna Rock Mountain - the highest of the cliffs on the banks of the Volga. In the western and eastern parts of Zhigulevsky ridge within the reserve, the ridge is separated from the plateau valleys " ravines " - Otvazhnenskogo, cold, and Kalyanova Shiryaevo. In the central part of the south of the village of ashy Ridge takes the form of a dome, steeply to the north, and gradually rolling south in a slightly inclined surface of the plateau to the south.
The island portion of the reserve is composed of alluvial sands and sandy loams. The total length of the island along the northern portion of the shaft that connects the island and Shalyga Seredysh, is 5 km away. Island Shalyga completely flooded during the flood period. The largest depressions flooded all the time - it's backwater shallows between the islands, channels and floodplain lake's Mail (Klyuchuzhino).
In the forest valleys meet very rare species of plants. Among them deserves special mention knautia Tatar.
Moose - the largest animal living in the reserve. According to the well-known expert on animals living in the Volga region, Professor MN Bogdanov at the end of the XIX century on the Samara Bend lived quite a lot of moose. In connection with the revolutionary events of the beginning of XX century, has weakened the protection of private property, poaching has increased dramatically and the number of moose greatly reduced. After the organization in 1985, on the territory adjacent to the reserve, the amount of the national park forest is cut down dramatically reduced, and in this area continues to deteriorate elk forage base. So the preconditions for growth in the number of elk in the present time.
Spotted Deer has never until 1938 any Zhiguli or the Samara Bend in general in the wild do not inhabit. In 1938, the reserve was delivered about 30 heads of deer, which was originally in the year held in fenced area, and then gradually released beyond. Spotted deer began to settle on the Zhiguli, and their number increased. At the close of the reserve in 1951, its territory and the immediate vicinity is home to about a hundred head of sika deer. After the closing of the reserve in 1951 to take care of the deer was no one, and one with severe deep snows of winter 1955-1956. It was sufficient for the complete destruction of the population of sika deer. Poaching and wolf predation and only accelerated this process. Introduced in 1960, it was hoped that some of the deer still survived, was not confirmed, and never more than in this kind of Zhiguli not met.
Roe. The first mention of a roe deer in the Samara region belong to the XVIII century. Pallas took the deer population living here, they described to the Siberian subspecies of the common deer. According to the aforementioned MN Bogdanov at the end of the XIX century on the Samara Bend roe it was a common inhabitant of our region. However, the organization of the first protected area in the Zhiguli deer was not here. For a quarter century of work reserve until its closure in 1951, experts zoologists deer in the reserve has never been marked. The first signs of the appearance of a new species of hoofed animals came in 1960. This marks a new beast was taken at the beginning of the sika deer tracks that are not subsequently confirmed. Later, it was repeatedly seen not only tracks, but the animals themselves. Since deer are constantly found in the reserve, but its population has always been low - no more than a dozen goals.
Boar. in the foreseeable historical past of wild boar in the area of ??Lada nobody celebrated. In any case, no reports of academic expeditions of the XVIII century, nor in the subsequent scientific reports about the nature of our region of wild boars was not mentioned. As a result, a number of measures to protect game animals quantity of many game animals started to increase. Cabana resettled in hunting farms, fed, the shooting was carried out under the licenses to a limited extent. In the beginning was a lot of wild boars in hunting areas on the lands surrounding the reserve, and in 1973 for the first time after several centuries were marked by the complete absence of traces of wild boar on the Samara Bend in the Zhiguli. Since then, the boar is firmly entrenched, and its number in the reserve level fluctuates from a few dozen to three hundred heads.
In the recent past Zhiguli we deserve the name of «bearish angle», as Bears at the beginning of the XIX century there were regular inhabitants. But in the middle of the century, these animals were in the Samara region completely destroyed.
At present the major predators can be found only a wolf and lynx. Lynx in the reserve is not held constant. Separate meetings with lynx or marked trails in the reserve every year. But wolf I have always lived in the Zhiguli forests and forest-steppe in the surrounding areas.
Another member of the family dog ??- Fox - The original inhabitants of our region. The number of these animals in the reserve is small and ranges from two dozen to hundreds.
From the members of the family dog ??except wolves and foxes are very rare in the reserve and its surroundings raccoon dog. From musteline the reserve has long been inhabited by badger, marten, weasel, stoat and weasel.
FGBU «Zhiguli State Reserve» It offers on the territory of two excursions: Car «Strelna Mountain» and pedestrian «Stone Bowl ».
